Colm Tóibín va néixer l?any 1955 a Enniscorthy, Irlanda. Va fer els estudis d?història i anglès a l?University College Dublin, i es va llicenciar el 1975. El setembre del mateix any es va traslladar a Barcelona, on va viure durant tres anys fent de professor d?anglès. El 1978 va retornar a Dublín per ampliar els estudis en l?especialitat de literatura moderna anglesa i americana i, al mateix temps, va començar a treballar com a periodista en revistes i diaris irlandesos. El 1985 va iniciar un seguit de viatges arreu del món, sempre sense interrompre la seva activitat periodística i literària. El 1988, va fer una nova estada d?un any a Barcelona per escriure Homage to Barcelona i va reprendre el contacte amb la ciutat i alguns pobles dels Pirineus, on, des d?aleshores, sovint fa estades. Actualment viu a Dublín.Des de 1990 fins ara ha escrit diverses novel·les i llibres de no-ficció, i ha continuat la seva tasca de periodista i en diferents terrenys de la literatura: docència, edició, etc. Ha guanyat diversos premis i els seus llibres han estat traduïts a divuit idiomes. En castellà s?han publicat, entre d?altres, El brezo en llamas (The Heather Blazing), Crónicas de la noche (The Story of the Night) i El faro de Blackwater (The Blackwater Lightship).
