Edgar Allan Poe (Boston, 1809 - Baltimore, 1849), narrador, poeta y crítico literario, es unode los máximos exponentes de la literatura estadounidense y universal. Después de haber publicado tres volúmenes depoesía, empezó a escribir sus primeros relatos en 1831, cinco de los cuales vieron la luz en el Philadelphia SaturdayCourier en 1832. Poe llegó a saborear el éxito masivo por primera vez con la publicación, en The Evening Mirror, de suhoy archiconocido poema «El cuervo» (1845), uno de los hitos de la poesía estadounidense.Ese año se convirtió enredactor jefe del Broadway Journal, un periódico que quebró menos de un año después.
