Robert B. Parker (Springfield, 1932-Cambridge, 2010) fue uno de los autores de novela negra más prolíficos y respetados. Sus dos primeras obras, El manuscrito Godwulf (SN, 255) y Dios salve al muchacho (SN, 259), ya estaban protagonizadas por Spenser, el detective privado que iniciaría la serie que le hizo famoso y le convirtió en un referente del género negro estadounidense. El personaje fue llevado a la pequeña pantalla en los años ochenta y gozó de una gran popularidad. Parker fue autor también de otras sagas policiacas, como la de la detective Sunny Randall y la del policía Jesse Stone. En 1989 aceptó terminar la novela inacabada de Raymond Chandler La historia de Poodle Springs, y en 1991 escribió una secuela para El sueño eterno. En 2002 Robert B. Parker recibió el Grand Master Award Edgar por el conjunto de su obra.
