Isaac Bashevis Singer nació en Radzymin, Polonia, en 1904. Fue hijo y nieto de rabinos y vivió en el barrio judío de Varsovia hasta 1935, cuando emigró a Estados Unidos. Su obra, sin embargo, tuvo siempre a Polonia como horizonte: el tema más socorrido en las novelas y cuentos de Singer es, justamente, la vida en aquel país en diferentes períodos históricos, con particular atención a la vida cotidiana de las comunidades judías. Recibió el Nacional Book Award en 1974 y el Premio Nobel en 1978. Murió en Florida, Estados Unidos, en 1991.
