Stanley G. Payne es uno de los más reconocidos hispanistas del mundo anglosajón, y probablemente uno de los más polémicos, en parte debido a sus alabanzas a historiadores como César Vidal o Pío Moa. Académicamente el profesor Payne es Doctor en Historia por la Universidad de Columbia y profesor emérito de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison. Es miembro de la American Academy of Arts and Sciences y, desde 1987, académico de la Real Academia Española de la Historia. En su vertiente profesional, es codirector del Journal of Contemporary History, y ha escrito con asiduidad en los medios españoles ABC y El Mundo. Aparte, ha colaborado en multitud de cursos en universidades españolas y del resto del mundo. Como escritor es autor de 15 libros y de más de un centenar de artículos.
