Edith Wharton nació en Nueva York en 1862. Durante la década de 1890 escribió relatos para Scribner?s Magazine y, en 1902, publicó El valle de la decisión, aunque su reputación literaria se consolidó con La casa de la alegría (1905). En 1905 trasladó su residencia a Francia, donde escribió Ethan Frome (1911). Posteriormente, Wharton produjo un gran número de novelas, libros de viajes, relatos y poemas, entre los que cabe destacar Las costumbres del país (1913), La edad de la inocencia (1920, por la que recibió el Premio Pulitzer, siendo la primera mujer en obtener dicho galardón) o el ciclo de novelas agrupadas bajo el título Vieja Nueva York (1924). Wharton, discípula de Henry James y una de las más importantes narradoras de la literatura norte-americana, murió en Francia en 1937.
