Nació el 24 de noviembre de 1849 en Manchester, Inglaterra. La infancia y la juventud las vivió en Inglaterra pero tras la muerte de su padre y la ruina del negocio familiar, emigró a EE.UU. en 1865. Como medio para ganarse la vida empezó escribiendo poemas y relatos cortos. En 1886 escribiría su primera novela, That Lass O'Lowrie's. Con la publicación en 1886 de El pequeño lord se dio a conocer como autora de libros infantiles. Sin embargo el éxito no llegaría hasta la publicación de La princesita en 1905 y El jardín secreto en 1910, completando así su trilogía para niños. Su vida no fue un camino de rosas: se divorció dos veces, de los dos hijos que tuvo perdió al primogénito. Se dedicó, aparte de la literatura a la jardinería, espiritismo y a la teosofía. Murió en 1924.
