Francisco Ayala nació en

Granada en 1906. Estudió derecho y filosofía y letras en Madrid. En 1936,

mientras realiza una gira de conferencias por Sudamérica, estalla la guerra

civil y regresa a España. En 1939, tras la derrota republicana, inicia un largo

exilio en un periplo vital que le llevará a ejercer la docencia en Buenos

Aires, Río de Janeiro o Puerto Rico. En 1956 se instala en Nueva York y es

profesor de literatura española e hispanoamericana en prestigiosas

universidades. En 1960 vuelve por primera vez a España, donde fija su

residencia en 1976 y participa activamente en la vida intelectual del país. A

lo largo de su intensa y dilatada vida, Ayala, doctor honoris causa por varias universidades y académico desde 1984, ha

ido creando una prolífica obra narrativa y ensayística que ha recibido el

reconocimiento público con numerosos galardones, entre ellos el de la Crítica (1972), el Nacional de

Narrativa (1983), el de las Letras Españolas (1988), el

Cervantes (1991) o

el Príncipe de Asturias (1998).
