C. J. Sansom estudió en la Universidad de Birmingham, donde se licenció, y también cursó un doctorado en Historia. Tras pasar por varios empleos, trabajó como abogado hasta que decidió dejarlo todo para escribir a tiempo completo. Además de 'Invierno en Madrid', C. J. Sansom ha escrito otras tres novelas de tema histórico, cuyo protagonista es el abogado Matthew Shardlake. Recientemente, la cadena de librerías Waterstone?s eligió a C. J. Sansom 'uno de los veinticinco novelistas del futuro'.
