Hija de emigrantes polacos, nació en 1938 en Inglaterra. Tras realizar estudios de historia del arte, fue la primera mujer que accedió al cargo de Slade Professor en la Universidad de Cambridge. En la actualidad, Anita Brookner es una autoridad internacional en pintura del siglo XVIII y da clases en el Instituto de Arte Courtland. Ha publicado varios estudios sobre pintu-ra francesa entre los que podemos destacar Watteau y Jacques Louis David, y las novelas A Start in Life, Look at me, Familia y amigos y Una relación inconveniente. En 1984 obtuvo el prestigioso Booker?s Prize con Hotel du Lac.
