Naceu o 22 de xullo de 1888 en Chicago e morreu o 26 de marzo de 1959 en La Jolla (California). Viviu en Inglaterra e educouse tamén en Francia e Alemaña. Foi soldado (participou na I Guerra Mundial, tras a que volvería a Estados Unidos), empregado de banca, xornalista e executivo dunha petroleira. A partir de 1933 decidiu dedicarse unicamente á escritura. Algunhas das súas obras con máis sona son The big sleep, onde aparece por primeira vez o seu personaxe máis famoso, Philip Marlowe; Farewell, my lovely; The lady in the lake e Five murderers. Nos seus relatos, como nos de Hammet, podemos atopar a xénese da novela negra norteamericana, na que o importante non é saber quen comete o crime, senón por que se cometeu ese crime.
