John Mortimer (Londres, 1923-The Chilterns, 2009) fue abogado, dramaturgo y novelista. Después de trabajar como guionista para la televisión durante la segunda guerra mundial, escribió un buen número de novelas mientras compaginaba dos exitosas carreras como abogado criminalista y como dramaturgo. Como abogado, adquirió gran notoriedad en los años setenta como defensor de la libertad de expresión en las numerosas causas abiertas contra libros, revistas y discos acusados de pornografía. Su obra de teatro más conocida, Viaje alrededor de mi padre (1963), fue llevada al cine y se representa continuamente.
En los años setenta creó uno de sus personajes más famosos: el abogado Horace Rumpole, protagonista de una serie de televisión y de varios libros.En los ochenta regresó a la novela con Un paraíso inalcanzable (1985), en la que introdujo el personaje de Leslie Titmuss y que supone la primera novela de la Trilogía Titmuss, que continúa con Titmuss Regained (1990) y The Sound of Trumpets (1998). Un paraíso inalcanzable se convirtió también en una recordada serie de televisión. Asimismo escribió cuatro volúmenes de sus memorias, entre ellos el exitoso Clinging to the Wreckage (1982). En 1998 fue nombrado Sir por su contribución al mundo de las artes. Vivió la mayor parte de su vida y murió en la casa de The Chilterns que había construido su padre, también abogado.
