Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness.
Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilised people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises important questions about imperialism and racism.
Joseph Conrad (Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, 1857-1924) De origen polaco, perdió a sus padres cuando era niño y con sólo 17 años se embarcó por primera vez en Francia para iniciar su aprendizaje en la marina mercante. En 1886 obtuvo la nacionalidad británica y, ocho años después, abandonó la marina para dedicarse en exclusiva a la literatura. Pronto se convirtió en uno de los escritores fundamentales de la literatura inglesa, con grandes éxitos como El negro del Narcissus, El corazón de las tinieblas, Lord Jim, Tifón, El agente secreto, Victoria y Entre la tierra y el mar (Belacqva, 2006), entre otros. Cuando murió, había tenido tiempo de contrabandear armas para los revolucionarios carlistas en España, de viajar desde el archipiélago malayo hasta la costa caribe de Colombia, de tener dos hijos y escribir más de veinte libros, de ser admirado por Henry James y por André Gide, de negarse a recibir los máximos honores de la Corona Británica y de cambiar para siempre el arte de la novela.
