David Vann va néixer a l'illa Adak (Alaska) i actualment viu a Califòrnia i ensenya a la Universitat de San Francisco. Autor d'un extraordinari llibre autobiogràfic, A mile down: The true story of a disastrous career at the sea, l'èxit li arriba més tard, quan publica Legend of a suicide, un conjunt de relats que giren al voltant del suïcidi del seu pare i al cor dels quals hi ha la novel·la curtaSukkwan Island(Empúries, 2010). Fenomen de vendes a França i als Estats Units, aquest debut en el camp de la narrativa ha guanyat nombrosíssims premis, entre ells el Premi Llibreter, i ha estat celebrat tant per la crítica com pels lectors. Caribou Island (Empúries, 2011) recupera els escenaris de la seva primera obra i se centra també en l'ensorrament d'una parella. Comparat a Cormac McCarthy, David Vann s'ha instal·lat en la primera línia dels autors nord-americans.
