In old Japan, sexual love among the samurai was permissible, and often matured into lifelong companionships. Comrade Loves of the Samurai touches the subject of both normal and abnormal love with honesty and tenderness.

Ihara Saikaku, seudónimo de Hirayama Tōgo, (Osaka, 1642-ibídem, 1693). Fue un poeta y novelista japonés, una de las más brillantes figuras de la literatura japonesa del período Edo en la historia de Japón. Ganó fama por su rapidez al componer haikai-no-renga, y estableció un record al crear 23.500 versos en un solo día durante una ceremonia en el santuario de Sumiyoshi, en Osaka, en 1685. Es conocido por novelas como Kōshoku Ichidai Otoko (1682), con la que inició un nuevo género: el ukiyo-zōshi.
