Alain de Botton nació en Suiza en 1969. Es autor de Del amor (1995), El placer de sufrir (1996), Cómo cambiar tu vida con Proust (1998), Beso a ciegas (1999), Las consolaciones de la filosofía (Taurus 2001), y El arte de viajar (Taurus 2002). En febrero de 2003 le nombraron Caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras, uno de los mayores honores en Francia; y en noviembre del mismo año recibió el Premio europeo de ensayo Charles Veillon.
