John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) va ser professor de llengua i literatura anglesa a Oxford, i es va fer famós a tot el món per la seva obra literària, fundadora d'una mitologia pròpia. De la seva llarga obra, cal destacar El Hòbbit i la trilogia El Senyor dels Anells. El Silmaríl·lion és un complement imprescindible d'El Senyor dels Anells. Les primeres notes d'El Silmaríl·lion es remunten al 1917 i van prenent cos al llarg dels anys fins a configurar un nou univers mitològic que funciona com a precedent dels esdeveniments de la Tercera Edat narrats a El Senyor dels Anells.
